Slather on sunscreen, but choose wisely.

The sun … everybody loves it, but that doesn’t mean those rays love you. Regrettably, direct exposure to the sun’s UVA and UVB rays will cause the skin to prematurely age and wrinkle. Even more frightening, those rays can cause non-melanoma and more aggressive melanoma skin cancer.  It’s also worth noting that the rays are just as dangerous whether the exposure is on the beach  or in a tanning bed.

All of this makes the use of sunscreens, or sunblocks, critically important. In fact, applying sunscreen liberally should become part of your daily routine, in summer as well as all year round. You should be aware, however, that these protective creams, sprays and lotions are not all created equal. So choose carefully, both to protect your skin and enhance its healthy glow.

Below, we’ve provided some guidance on how to select and use sunscreen to avoid: sunburn; premature sagging and wrinkles; age spots; dry, scaly skin; and skin cancer.

  • Select a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more.
  • Make sure your choice offers “broad-spectrum protection” against both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Look for the words “water resistant”.
  • Stay away from sprays and powders, which don’t adhere to the skin as well.
  • Avoid dangerous ingredients like Retinyl Palmitate and Oxybenzone.
  • Look for mineral sunblock ingredients, such as zinc dioxide and titanium dioxide.
  • Avoid rashes and negative reactions by seeking out hypoallergenic products.
  • Apply your sunscreen 20 minutes before going outside, and don’t be stingy. Use it liberally and repeat often to maintain the highest possible level of protection.
  • Most importantly, don’t go bargain hunting. Research available products online and buy the best, such as these sunscreens which offer both protection and hydration: Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50 and Sport UV Defense SPF 45 by SkinCeuticals, Universal Moisturizer SPF 30 by Image Skincare, and Solar Shade SPF 45 by Abella Skin Care. For your convenience, all are available at Danik.
